What is the difference between Carat and Ratti?
Carat is the international standard for gemstone weight — 1 Carat = 0.2 grams. Ratti is the traditional Indian (Vedic) unit — 1 Ratti = 0.1215 grams. Jyotish prescriptions always specify weight in Ratti because it predates the international Carat system. Modern gemstone sellers list in Carats, so you need to convert when following a Jyotish prescription.
How many Ratti is 3 Carats?
3 Carats = 3 × 0.2g = 0.6g. Since 1 Ratti = 0.1215g, that gives 0.6 ÷ 0.1215 = 4.94 Ratti. Acharya (Dr.) Lavbhushan's minimum prescription for most Jyotish gemstones is 3 Ratti (1.82 Carats). For Yellow Sapphire, the recommended minimum is 4 Ratti (2.43 Carats).
What is the minimum Ratti prescribed by Acharya Lavbhushan?
Minimum recommendations vary by gemstone: Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) — 4 Ratti minimum, ideally 5–7 Ratti. Blue Sapphire (Neelam) — 3 Ratti minimum, 4–5 recommended. Emerald (Panna) — 3 Ratti minimum. Ruby (Manik) — 3 Ratti minimum. Pearl (Moti) — 5 Ratti minimum, as Pearl's energy correlates directly with weight. Red Coral (Moonga) — 6 Ratti minimum. Stones below the minimum Ratti may not deliver consistent planetary activation.
Is 1 Carat always equal to 1.646 Ratti?
Using the standard Indian Ratti of 0.1215g (121.5mg), yes: 1 Carat (0.2g) ÷ 0.1215g = 1.646 Ratti. However, historically different regions used slightly different Ratti standards (0.121g to 0.1215g).
