Many families perform Tulsi Vivah on Ekadashi itself, on Dwadashi, or on any evening up to Kartik Purnima, so choose the day that suits your family. For the fast, parana and Vishnu jagran, see our Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2026 guide.
Why Tulsi Is Married to Shaligram
Tulsi is worshipped as a form of Goddess Lakshmi, and Shaligram, a sacred black stone from the Gandaki river, as a form of Lord Vishnu. Their marriage marks the end of Chaturmas and the start of the wedding season.
As the story is commonly told, Vrinda was a devoted wife whose purity protected her husband, the asura Jalandhar, from defeat. To end Jalandhar's reign of terror, Lord Vishnu broke that protection, and Vrinda, grief-stricken, cursed him to become a stone, the Shaligram. She gave up her body, and the tulsi plant grew from her ashes. Moved by her devotion, Vishnu blessed her to be married to him every year, and declared that no offering to him would be complete without a tulsi leaf.
That's why tulsi is dressed as a bride on this day, and why the ceremony is believed to bring harmony and blessings for marriages in the family. In Gujarat and Maharashtra, Tulsi Vivah is often celebrated with a full baraat, music and a community ceremony.

Tulsi Shaligram Vivah Vidhi
The Tulsi Shaligram vivah vidhi follows the steps of a Hindu wedding, on a small scale. Do it in the evening, after sunset, with the whole family.
-
Prepare the mandap: Clean the tulsi pot, place it on a chowki, and build a small mandap over it with sugarcane stalks. Decorate with flowers and a rangoli.
-
Dress the bride: Drape the red chunri on the tulsi, and offer sindoor, bindi, bangles and mehendi.
-
Seat the groom: Bathe the Shaligram with panchamrit and water, apply chandan, dress it in yellow cloth, and place it beside the tulsi; many families place it to the right of the tulsi as you face the mandap, so follow your family's custom.
-
Haldi and puja: Apply haldi to both, then offer kumkum, akshat, flowers and a ghee diya.
-
Kanyadaan and gathbandhan: The family offers the tulsi in kanyadaan, and ties the kalava between the tulsi and the Shaligram.
-
Pheras: Carry the Shaligram around the tulsi seven times, singing mangal geet or chanting Vishnu's name.
-
Aarti and prasad: Perform the tulsi aarti ("Jai Jai Tulsi Mata"), then share sweets, amla and fruits as prasad.
For the diya, pure Gir Cow Bilona Ghee is a traditional choice, and you'll find puja essentials in our Pooja Collection.
Shaligram at Home: A Short Care Note
Many traditions hold that once a Shaligram comes into the home, it should be worshipped daily, with a bath of water, a little chandan and a tulsi leaf offered each morning. A Shaligram is also traditionally received or gifted from a temple or a family elder, rather than casually bought.
If your family can't keep up daily worship, use a small idol or picture of Lord Vishnu or Krishna as the groom for Tulsi Vivah instead; the ceremony is just as complete.
Remedies for Early Marriage (Shadi Mein Deri Ke Upay)
Tulsi Vivah is traditionally considered one of the most auspicious days for prayers about marriage. These remedies are rooted in faith and tradition; alongside them, open conversations with family and an active search matter just as much.
-
Take part in Tulsi Vivah: Perform or attend the ceremony, and take part in the tulsi kanyadaan. It's believed to remove obstacles to marriage, and couples without a daughter often perform it for its punya.
-
Offer shringar to tulsi: On Tulsi Vivah, unmarried girls offer a red chunri, sindoor and bangles to the tulsi and pray for a good life partner.
-
Light a tulsi diya daily: Light a ghee diya at the tulsi every evening, except where your family avoids it, and pray for a suitable match.
-
Chant the Katyayani mantra: The gopis of Vrindavan prayed to Goddess Katyayani for Krishna as their husband with this mantra from the Bhagavata Purana (10.22.4). Chant it 108 times each morning:
कात्यायनि महामाये महायोगिन्यधीश्वरि। नन्दगोपसुतं देवि पतिं मे कुरु ते नमः॥
Katyayani Mahamaye Mahayoginyadhishwari, Nandagopasutam Devi patim me kuru te namah.
-
Thursday remedy: Wear yellow, offer haldi, chana dal and jaggery to Lord Vishnu or a banana tree, and keep a light fast, which is traditionally linked to strengthening Jupiter, the planet of marriage.
-
Wear a harmony bead: A Gauri Shankar Rudraksha, symbolising Shiva and Parvati's union, is traditionally worn for marriage and harmony.
-
Check the kundli: Delays are often linked to the 7th house, Jupiter, Venus or Manglik dosha. A consultation can identify the cause; gemstones like Yellow Sapphire or Diamond should only be worn after one.
Remedies for Men (Ladkon Ki Shadi Mein Deri Ke Upay)
-
Friday remedy for Venus: In a man's chart, Venus signifies the wife. On Fridays, wear white or light colours, offer kheer or white sweets to Goddess Lakshmi, donate rice, sugar or white cloth, and chant "Om Shukraya Namah" 108 times.
-
Take part in Tulsi Vivah: join the groom's side of the ceremony and carry the Shaligram in the pheras.
-
Recite the verse for a suitable wife: Many families recite this verse from the Argala Stotram (Durga Saptashati):
पत्नीं मनोरमां देहि मनोवृत्तानुसारिणीम्। तारिणीं दुर्गसंसारसागरस्य कुलोद्भवाम्॥
Patnim manoramam dehi manovrittanusarinim, Tarinim durgasamsarasagarasya kulodbhavam.
It asks the Goddess for a loving wife of a good family, in harmony with one's nature, who helps one cross life's difficulties.
-
Check the kundli: for persistent delays, a consultation can look at the 7th house, Venus and Manglik dosha.
If your 21-day Manifestation Diary intention is about marriage, Tulsi Vivah is a meaningful day to place your page in the tulsi pot.
