Introduction
Every family wants the same thing from Diwali: A home that feels peaceful, a year that feels abundant, and Goddess Lakshmi's blessings at the door. Vastu Shastra and astrology both say this begins long before the puja, with how you prepare the space itself.
These 11 Diwali Vastu tips are simple, low-cost and easy to do in the two weeks before Diwali. Most need nothing more than time and intention.

Tips 1 to 4: Prepare the Home
1. Deep Clean and Declutter Every Room (Ghar Ki Safai Aur Kabaad Hatao)
Clutter is believed to block the flow of positive energy and wealth. Clear out old newspapers, unused clothes, broken toys and expired items, and give away what's still useful. This is the first answer to "ghar se negativity kaise hataye."
2. Remove Broken and Stopped Items (Tooti Aur Band Cheezein Hatao)
Broken mirrors, cracked idols, chipped crockery and stopped clocks are traditionally linked to stagnation. Repair or remove them before Diwali, and retire old clay idols respectfully.
3. Keep the Northeast Clean and Light (Ishan Kona Saaf Rakho)
The northeast (Ishan kona) is the most sacred zone in Vastu, linked to peace and clear thinking. Keep it clean, uncluttered and well lit, and avoid heavy furniture, shoes or dustbins there.
4. Decorate the Main Door to Welcome Lakshmi (Mukhya Dwar Sajao)
Lakshmi is believed to enter through a clean, bright entrance. Hang a toran of mango leaves or marigolds, draw a rangoli with Lakshmi's footprints pointing inward, and keep the doorway well lit. An Om Vastu Frame above the door adds lasting positive energy.

Tips 5 to 8: Light, Puja and Wealth
5. Light Diyas in Every Corner (Har Kone Mein Diya Jalao)
A ghar with no dark corners on Diwali night is believed to leave no space for negativity. Light a main ghee diya in the puja room, plus diyas at the entrance, windows, kitchen and balcony. Pure Gir Cow Bilona Ghee is a traditional choice for the puja diya.
Safety: keep every diya on a metal or clay plate, away from curtains, torans and paper decorations, and never leave lit diyas unattended near children or pets.
6. Set Up the Puja in the Northeast (Puja Ishan Kone Mein Karo)
Place your Lakshmi Ganesh chowki in the northeast, with Ganesh on your left and Lakshmi on your right as you face the altar. Our Diwali Lakshmi Puja Vidhi covers the full steps and the 8 November muhurat.
7. Activate the North, Kuber's Zone (Uttar Disha Ko Saaf Rakho)
The north is ruled by Kuber, the god of wealth. Keep it clutter-free, and place your locker against the southwest wall so it opens toward the north. A Pyrite Shree Yantra Frame or a Kuber Laxmi Yantra in this zone is a popular Diwali remedy for prosperity.
8. Keep a Laxmi Potli in the Locker (Tijori Mein Laxmi Potli Rakho)
A Laxmi Potli, filled with gomti chakra, haldi, unbroken rice and a silver coin, is offered in the Lakshmi Puja and then kept in the locker for steady wealth. See what goes inside in our Laxmi Potli guide.

Tips 9 to 11: Purify the Home and Please Lakshmi
9. Purify the Air with Dhoop, Camphor and a Bell (Ghar Ko Shuddh Karo)
On the evenings before Diwali, burn dhoop, loban or camphor and carry it through every room, especially the corners. Ringing a pooja bell as you go is traditionally believed to clear stagnant energy; read why in our Kansa Pooja Bell guide. Natural dhoop cones work well for this.
Safety: keep windows open while burning dhoop or camphor, especially if anyone at home has asthma, since Diwali-season air is already heavy.
10. Mop with Salt Water (Namak Ke Paani Se Pocha Lagao)
A simple Vastu remedy for ghar se negativity hatana: add a spoonful of sea salt to your mopping water a day or two before Diwali. Many families avoid this on Thursdays, so follow your family's custom. On marble or wooden floors, use a very small amount and wipe dry afterwards, or simply keep a small bowl of sea salt in a corner of the room instead.
11. Please Lakshmi on Diwali Night (Lakshmi Ko Prasann Karo)
Diwali par Lakshmi ko kaise prasann kare? Do your Lakshmi Puja within the muhurat, chant "Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah" 108 times, and offer kheer, lotus or red flowers. Keep the main door slightly open during the puja, keep a diya burning at the entrance through the night, and don't sweep the house after the puja.
Just as important: keep the home harmonious. Vastu and astrology both say Lakshmi stays where there is respect, kindness and no quarrelling.
Safety: If you keep a diya burning through the night, use a deep, stable holder or a glass-covered akhand diya, place it well away from the door's toran and curtains, and check it before you sleep.
Diwali Par Kya Nahi Karna Chahiye? (What Not to Do)
On Diwali, avoid lending money, quarrelling, keeping the house dark, gambling, and keeping broken idols or stopped clocks at home. These are traditionally believed to keep Lakshmi away on the most important night of her year.
-
Don't lend or borrow money on Diwali day; settle payments before or after.
-
Don't keep any room dark after sunset, especially the entrance and puja room.
-
Don't quarrel or speak harshly at home during the festival.
-
Don't gamble, even as a "tradition"; it's believed to drive wealth away.
-
Don't keep broken idols, cracked mirrors or stopped clocks in the house.
-
Don't sweep the house after the Lakshmi Puja.

Diwali Vastu Tips for Flats
In a flat, use the cleanest north or east area for the puja if the northeast has a bathroom, and treat the flat's own door as your main entrance, even if it opens onto a corridor.
-
Puja corner: A wall-mounted mandir or a small shelf in the north or east of the living room works well.
-
Main door: Keep the corridor side clean and lit, and use a toran and rangoli mat if floor rangoli isn't allowed.
-
Locker: Place it against the south or west wall of the bedroom, opening toward the north.
-
Diyas: Use LED or glass-covered diyas on balconies and in corridors where open flames aren't allowed.
Conclusion
Sukh, shanti aur samriddhi don't come from one big ritual. They come from a clean home, a bright doorway, a calm puja and a family that welcomes Lakshmi with respect. Start with one tip today, and by 8 November your ghar will be ready.
